St Andrews’ Sheltered Housing unit’s security improvements

Residents of St Andrews’ Sheltered Housing Unit contacted Groundwork West London to highlight their concerns regarding the security of the unit and surrounding gardens. The garages to the rear of the building had been attracting anti-social behaviour in the form of drug taking, graffiti and intimidation of the elderly residents. On a number of occasions the unit had been broken into resulting in damage to the fabric of the building as well as increasing fear of crime from the residents.

With funds from Operation Gate It residents discussed the issues with the local Crime Prevention Officer and decided to restrict access by securing the front gardens with railings and a gate.

Residents reported feeling immediately safer after seeing this visible investment in the area. The railings and gate have also been successful at designing out anti-social behaviour as well as providing a secure garden for relaxation.
