Below are the Operation Gate It projects for the South East of England. To view another region please return to the map and select a new region. DartfordCharles Street Railway ArchesResidents wanted to improve the area around the railway arches in Greenhith, near Dartford, which was attracting fly-tipping, dumped stolen cars and illegal use of motor-cycles. The arches formed part of a route-way linked to residential areas, a school, the local supermarket and the train station. The lack of lighting and many obstacles reducing sight lines coupled with anti-social behaviour meant that the route was infrequently used. Operation Gate It enabled residents to take action and address their concerns. After discussion with the Police architectural liaison officer, the highways department and support from Groundwork Kent Thames-side an action plan was agreed. Measures included installation of new lighting columns to improve pedestrian vision and the resurfacing of the path under the archway. In addition, 31 bollards, two gates and 22 metres of fencing have been installed to prevent access of abandoning vehicles and fly-tipping. Sight lines across the area have also been opened up by remodelling earth banks and clearing overgrown shrubs. The project has successfully reduced crime in the area and the increased use of the route by residents is helping to lower the fear of crime once associated with this area. The residents association have also enjoyed a higher profile with a growing reputation for providing an influential voice for residents’ views. |
